An airport transfer is the first and last impression of a trip, and it is the part travellers most often get wrong — underestimating the drive, queuing for a rideshare after a long-haul flight, or discovering the car booked for four people cannot take four suitcases. How long does the drive into Auckland take?

Auckland Airport sits roughly 21 kilometres south of the city centre. In light traffic the drive to the CBD takes around 30 minutes. Through the weekday morning and late-afternoon peaks it can stretch well beyond 45 minutes, and major events or an incident on State Highway 20 can add more again.

Our advice for departures is simple: work backwards from your check-in time, not your take-off time. For an international departure, most airlines want you at the counter three hours ahead; for domestic, an hour is usually comfortable.
